John Hancock, Grantsman
John Hancock has produced successful proposals and managed grants since 1978.
He served as Executive Director of the Spokane Symphony and the Pasadena POPS Orchestra, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Milwaukee Symphony, and Orchestra Manager and grants administrator of the Toledo Symphony.
National foundation experience includes Gates, Paul Allen, Murdock, Kresge, Jewett, and Mellon. Federal agencies include the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and National Trust for Historic Preservation. State agencies include Washington, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa. In Spokane, his Fox Theater historic renovation proposals and statehouse advocacy won substantial funding from the State of Washington. As an educational program designer, he created new partnerships with public and private schools, community centers, juvenile courts, and an Indian school. Corporate grants include Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Society Bank, Key Bank, and Target. Interagency collaborations and program start-ups have been a management specialty.
He has provided executive leadership of annual campaigns, capital giving, endowment, planned giving, corporate sponsorship, marketing and public relations, program design, building projects, human resources, strategic planning, and board development.
His education includes a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan, masters from Boston University, and Executive Education at the Business School of Stanford University. As a professional French horn player, he was a member of the Toledo Symphony, the Nashville Symphony, and the Des Moines Metro Opera.
